Probably Michael On Fire’s most well-known song. More than a song, a near-legendary folk tale stemming from a personal encounter on the Ft. Hall Reservation; a vision put forth unto the eyes and the imagination of the songwriter by his Native Muse. This recording is off his Keepers of the Flame album, which brought guitar greats Ced Curtis (from London, England), with his sweet tones and tasty licks and Texas (Tornado) Hall of Famer Stevie Ray Davis, who was the best slide guitar player I’ve ever been around (I give a nod to Bugs Henderson and Freddie King, who both had something to do with that) into the studio at the same time, to join Michael and colorful hand drummer Tobias. An epic two-year period of non-stop touring with Stevie Ray as the lead guitar player preceded this recording, and continued, starting the very next day, for three more years with Ced in the touring trio.
This song was born on the Idaho Plains, raised in the Rocky Mountains, and now lives and reverberates in the hearts of people (the tribe) from Coast to Coast and throughout the world
lyrics
Many moons many suns over 99 years
The buffalo died on the wise open range
So the great spirit left, so we sell cigarettes
And the warriors dance on the Idaho plains
Chorus:
Will you make me a drum, will you make me a
drum
So I can make thunder, and bring back the sun
When the trees come alive and the deer start to
run
When the river gets warm, I’ll make you a drum
I heard sounds in my heart, I felt pain in my ears
A fence made of laws to keep us all here
I will run like the wind, I will fight like a bear
You can’t buy my heart, and you don’t own the air
Chorus
In a house made of wood, In the shape of a
square
My body might be, but my spirit’s not there,
In a circle of strength, In a warrior’s wheel
The sound of the soul, It’s a sound you can feel
Chorus
